Type 304, 201 and 316 Stainless Steel Banding: Importance and differentiation

They say don’t judge a book by its cover but we say don’t judge stainless steel by its name. You would think that stainless steel never stains but you would be wrong; especially if you are using them in an industrial setting. Like other metals, it is susceptible to grease, markings and eventually rust. Stainless steel banding is no exception

Making the Grade

Now, when you factor in grades of stainless steel this makes the material harder to understand. Because stainless steel is used for some many applications, it is engineered to adapt to each situation. The mixture of elements they mix inside the stainless steel is categorized by grade. Each grade is best suited to a particular purpose.

When it comes to stainless steel banding, the three most commonly used grades are: Type 304, type 201 and type 316. Here’s each description to help you understand which one is best for your application.

Type 201

This is Band-N-Go’s most commonly used type of stainless steel banding which is harder and stronger. It is a North American grade developed at a time when world nickel prices were very high. As a solution to these high prices, type 201 was created with reduced nickel (Ni) and a higher level of manganese (Mn) in its composition. Type 201 is specified by some municipalities and utilities initially for lower cost, but also now for its higher strength. Type 201 stainless steel is most often used for attaching signs and electrical fixtures to utility poles, clamping fittings to large diameter hoses and bundling cables and hoses.

Type 304

Type 304 is a general-purpose stainless steel, most commonly used around the world. If you have any stainless steel appliances (or faucets) it is probably made from type 304. Type 304 stainless steel is widely used in the sign and electrical industries to name a few. From our experience: Some of the most common uses are strapping insulation jacketing to pipes and tanks; fixing lightweight signs and advertising materials to columns or posts. In the pipelines, type 304 stainless steel banding is used to strap heat tracer cables to pipelines to prevent freezing.

Type 316

Type 316 was developed for added corrosion resistance. It generally has a slightly higher nickel content, but is distinguished by the addition of molybdenum (Mb). This Type of stainless steel is specified and used in marine environments; e.g. ocean going ships and oil and gas drilling platforms. From our experience, it’s typically used to fix cables to cable trays or columns and bundling cables or hoses. Type 316 banding is very common along coastlines (for signs or decorations), or in refrigeration applications.

How Band-N-Go Can Grow Your Business

Rudy Pasquini, President of Band N Go

Band-N-Go’s story begins back in the mid nineties. For years, I owned and operated an exterior light and sign repair business. In 2003, I sold it with the full intention of starting the next chapter of my life – retirement. But anyone who knows me well enough, understands my need to “stay in the game”. I have an entrepreneurial spirit and retirement just wasn’t in the cards. Not yet, at least.

My former company, Tri-Co Holdings Inc., specialized in the installation and repair of neon and fluorescent signage for major commercial properties in the City of Toronto and greater surrounding area.  A segment of our business also included the installation of flags and banners, in particular for several local “Business Improvement Associations” (BIA’s). In these applications, we were often installing banner arms onto light standards using stainless steel banding and buckles.  On several occasions, before the completion of a job, we would run out of material. I would have crews held up at one end of the city, with the supplier and the products I required at the other end. Not only was distance an issue, time was a roadblock. The supplier would process the sale with a valid purchase order; unfortunately the materials were only available for pick up the following day. No sooner. So, here we are. Idle crews and equipment because we could not get our hands on the stainless steel products we needed to get the job done.

After selling this business and retiring for a short time, I made the decision to import stainless steel banding myself. I was going to make it easy for other companies to obtain this product. After warehousing a substantial amount of stainless steel banding, buckles, and tools, I began to approach major distributors in Canada. They started to sell my products and had great success doing so. Throughout my travels across the country, and in meeting various distributors, I found there was a strong need for other items such as stainless steel mounting brackets, cable ties, coated stainless steel banding, and coated stainless steel cable ties. Before long, I was able to supply everything that an end user could want in these stainless steel products.

It was important to me to have all the certifications required by the various industries I supplied. So I got them. It was also essential that myself, and my staff, became experts in the field. So we did. Band-N-Go has since expanded our inventory to include various grades of stainless steel products and materials, specifically type 201, 304, and 316.

Today I realize that my initial goal has been achieved. Band-N-Go has made it easier and more efficient for Canadian businesses to purchase stainless steel banding and cable ties, both coated and uncoated, in Canada. Additionally, we have assisted in keeping costs in line by selling via a distributor network, while improving the productivity of installers across the country.

Today I set a NEW goal. My mission is to attract and increase business with more distributors across Canada and the United States. I want to be your supplier of record. I want to help grow your business by making it simple for your customers to obtain stainless steel banding, cable tie and the necessary tools. This is a call to action – counter sales staff, consultants, engineers, purchasing and distributing agents – Band-N-Go is the right company for the job. Your job.
